The Hunting Art Prizes is acknowledged to be
one of the top three art competitions in the United Kingdom with
prizes totalling £25,000. One of the main reasons is that
the competition is open, welcoming entries that range
from traditional figurative to modern abstract. As a result it
attracts a wide range of entries, including leading established
artists, promising newcomers and talented amateurs.
In a move typical of the innovative spirit and
energy of the Cornish art scene, the Gallery at Trebah, near Falmouth
in association with Truro based art consultancy, Artonomy, is
linking up with the Hunting Art Prizes. The tie-up means that
a selection from the London exhibition of finalists work
at the Royal College of Art will be displayed at Trebah throughout
March. Cornwall has an impressive record of success in the competition
- of 92 artists exhibiting in the 2004 London exhibition, seven
live in the county.
In addition, the Trebah exhibition will feature
paintings by Cornwall based artists, Nicholas Charles Williams
and Lisa Wright, both former Hunting First Prize winners.
The standing of the Hunting Art Prizes continues
to grow year on year and this is reflected in the willingness
of leading figures in the art world to judge the competition.
"The great strength of the prize remains
its commitment to the drawn or painted image, abstract or figurative,
objective or invented, on a plane surface. This means that there
are rich pickings to be had by the discriminating collector, for
almost all the works are for sale."
William Packer - Art Critic, Financial Times.
